a. I feel like the difference in technology policy between China and the US is very odd because it seems like it would be very hard to implement. I also feel like it is very harsh, limiting playing video games and such to only certain hours of the weekend and having extreme consequences for behavior that may not even be attributed to gaming or internet use. All around I feel like this policy is a bit extreme and could never work in the US.
b. I think parents being punished for having "bad behaviors" is absurd. First of all, what all is considered bad behaviors? This may change depending on who you are talking to. Also, if a child literally has a behavior disorder than it can't be managed as well as someone without a behavior disorder. That is not the parent or the child's fault at that point, so no one should be punished for that. I feel instead of trying to punish bad behavior, people should be trying to find out why these bad behaviors are occurring and what they can do to counteract them.
c. The problems with technology at school are things that I often find myself worrying about, especially when it comes to student access at home. I don't want to assign something using the internet and a student not be able to do it or do it well because they have a lack of or no internet connection at all. With all the issues that come with technology in school it is just something each individual teacher is going to have to navigate and conquer in their own way and continue to do so as technology continues to evolve.
d. I am surprised that there are completely virtual schools. I thought online schooling was just a college concept, but the fact they do it at all grade levels is really interesting to me. I would like to compare the quality of teaching in a purely in person classroom and a purely online classroom to see where all these formats both excel and fall short in.
I do like the "limited time" for the idea of internet usage--but if that's the proposal and practice from the government, I would have many concerns!
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting when you bring up the concept of shadow education--the government censorship and political structures with the cultural values shape this type of phenomena--I bet it may be hard for people to understand how family and patriarchic values influence the individual perception of the world if they are not cultivated under this social and cultural context! I can't agree with you anymore about the technology--it is there before and it's just how we use it wisely!
